The Emmaus Outreach Centre(EOC) is a home for the homeless disturbed(mentally sick) of our society.
Mental illness in the Cameroonian society is often considered as a curse, a result of witchcraft. Sometimes, it comes as a result of drug abuse. As such, those suffering from any mental disorder are often regarded with scorn and if not rejected even by their own family members.
They are thus left at the mercy of the population which makes a mockery of, exploits and abuses them(sexually and physically).
That explains why they often converge in urban areas and especially busy streets and markets, in view of being consoled by the mere fact that they are in the midst of people. But unfortunately, all they receive is rejection, abuse, mockery, etc.
They EOC is therefore a timely and prompt response to the plight of the voiceless and marginalized mentally ill of our society.
